A5 Update - 9.11.2011

1. QRN

The local QRN is very heavy, and may be up to S9 on all bands between 80m and 20m, for which we have had vertical antennas. This has impaired our reception and we are of the impression that you guys hear us much better than we hear you! We have located one of the sources for the QRN, being a very widely used led light fitting that they use in the ceilings “all over the place”. We figure that the total number at this resort; main building and bungalows, is abt 400! However the QRN may change during the day, so a band that was OK yesterday may be useless today. We have therefore used much time on making and erecting new antennas, like dipoles for 80, 40 and 20m, and a Delta Loop for 20m. We have also relocated the antennas as far away from the buildings as our coax supply allows. Mind also that we have to plan antennas so that we can be on the air with two stations all the time. The 3 ele beam for 15m of UA3AB, Andy, is a solid performer, and we are not having trouble with QRN on this band. It even works very well on 17m!!

2. Selected areas

In order to give everyone around the world a chance to work A5, we may ask for callers from some areas to stand by while we are utilizing propagation openings to reach far away areas. You have been very good to respect the instructions by the operator in this respect; thank you! We invite stations from Oceania, Africa and South and Central America and SE Asia to send us listener reports so that we can understand when the best openings to these areas are. We work some stations from these areas through the day, but would like to better understand the openings. Pls note that we are not able to make individual skeds. You may email us at la6vm@la6vm.no. And, pls also note that the internet has its own QSB here, so we are not online all the time; and do not expect answers.

3. Operation

We will take Thursday morning off for trekking to the monastery Tigers Nest, before lunch (08 UTC). We have not heard any stations at all on 80m, although we have tried to call CQ a number of times, to try to raise activity. We will participate in the JIDX contest, on Saturday as time allows. Our departure is Sunday 13 November at 06 UTC; arriving back in Oslo the 14th in the morning. We guess that all antennas will have to be taken down Saturday afternoon.
