A5  Wrap-up

Status

Last QSO was worked Saturday afternoon.
Antennas are being rigged down and gear packed.
We will depart from Paro airport around noon; heading for Oslo, where work chores are waiting.

A total of over 10.000 Q’s were made.

Operation

The local QRN took us by surprise, being up to S9 on all bands between 80m and 20m. When we became aware of this problem, antennas that were erected in good faith had to be relocated as far away from the buildings as our coax cable supply would allow, and by good fortune (Glen , W0GJ) lengths of good coax were available to us.

We found that 20m, which normally carries the workload, was almost useless. We monitored the NCDXF beacon frequency, but seldom heard more than the RR9O beacon. If others were heard, it would be the faint signals from the VR2B or 4S7B beacons.

However the higher bands were very good and compensated well.
1 ½ day was taken “off duty”, hamming wise, for sightseeing and light trekking; this trip should be a vacation also; and Bhutan has a lot to offer in that respect!

Please bear with us regarding QSL-ing!

Bottom lines

UP’s:

10m, 12m, 15m and 40m condx
The overwhelming and tireless interest to work A5 by the Deserving; you are the NO. 1!
Very polite behavior of the Deserving; always standing by when asked, so that we could work into areas with less favorable propagation paths.
Custom band pass and notch filters made by Just, LA9DL, allowing two stations on the air at all times, without interference.
Access to coax cables, when long stretches were required
Hospitality and help by Yeshey, A51AA, and his team from Bhutan Star travel company

Down’s:

Local QRN
20m condx
No 80m contacts
Few stations in the Americas worked
