A 25th Anniversary Not to be MissedThis week just passed saw the twenty-fifth anniversary of the day in 1985 when Geoff Watts transferred responsibility for management of the IOTA Programme to the RSGB. For those of you who were with the programme then, enjoy the occasion and reflect. For others, know that you are members of a large family who have committed themselves to one of the most rewarding and enduring quests in amateur radio.

The Honour Roll Exercise Sees Further GrowthWe reported at year end that compared with calendar year 2008, 2009 had enjoyed a 20.4% increase in credits confirmed by checkpoints and an overall 10.8% rise in applications processed. Rolling the 12 month comparison
period forward just one month (February to January) to cover the annual Honour Roll update exercise, we saw even more impressive figures, increases of 32.4% for credits given and 20.4% for applications processed. Take the opportunity of the next few months, traditionally a quieter time for the checkpoints, to submit your new application or an update.

Operations from AF-068Those querying the current 5C2SG/P operation claimed to be from AF-068 should note the entry in the IOTA Directory: "No credit will be given for operations after 31 January 2001 from the following islands unless evidence is produced that the operation was authorised by the government with de facto control - copies of the licence and permission to operate from the island are required. ....... Nothing in the way that the island is listed below should be taken to indicate the IOTA Committee's view as to the legal position on sovereignty. AF-068 S0 (CN) HERNE and VIRGINIA ISLANDS; sovereignty disputed between Western Sahara and Morocco."
Acceptance for IOTA will depend on the provision of this documentation plus evidence of presence as required in the normal way.

Happy New Year 2010To all our readers, a Happy New Year! We hope that, with improving band conditions and lots of island activity, you will have great success with making those island contacts. Don't forget, if you wish to update your published IOTA score, you have until 31 January to do so. Please remember to print off the Mailing List, mentioned in the application procedures, and include it with your cards when you send them to your checkpoint. Remember also that cards without a printed island name are not valid for IOTA.
