Jeff, KB1ZOJ, has a house on Saba island, where we will do the WPX-CW contest this weekend as PJ6A. Today he made his first ever QSO. On 15 mtrs SSB with a massive pile-up. It was fascinating as he struggled to pick out part calls but it didn't phase him at all - he just needed a set QSO text and short breaks every few minutes from the intense concentration. Talk about a baptism of fire!!! 73 de Roger/G3SXW.

Syd-Sudan

New countries are rarely born these days but the Republic of South Sudan is one such one. As the initial activity (ST0R) covered DXCC demand and was followed by a handful of hams working in the country in the humanitarian and other efforts by international organizations, such as recent Z81A (European Union), ZD8D (UN WFP), Z81Z (VOA) the amateur radio infrastructure is not yet established. This include regulations, licensing procedures, visitor licensing and considerations on calling for locals to get involved. Currently licensing is only provided for those permanently in the country. With these considerations in mind, Radio Arcala has taken up the initiative to work with the local Telecom administrators and provide them with assistance and helping hand. Olli, OH0XX and Martti, OH2BH are currently in Juba, the capital, and during their spare time also put newly licensed Z81X on the air. The Mission Goodwill South Sudan is pleased to recognize the support provided by Mr. Pekka Haavisto the Finnish Government Special Envoy forn of Africa and Sudan, the peace negotiation mediator during the South Sudan peace process and to Diya, Z81D (YI1DX) and Ken, Z81Z (K4ZW) for their valuable assistance on the ground. Also Yaesu Musen Co. Ltd has committed their support for these valuable undertakings.

P5 North Korea

P5, North Korea is the most wanted DXCC entity world-wide. Today, the Intrepid-DX Group, in partnership with the World-Wide DX Group, is announcing our sustained and ongoing effort to activate North Korea. For the past four years, we have been working with professionals in the business and tourism industries who are actively doing business in North Korea. We are leveraging their ideas and contacts towards our goal of a major Dxpedition over a four week period from within the DPRK. We are using the same techniques that were successful in opening up Kurdistan (Northern Iraq) South Sudan and Yemen to Dxpedition activity. We have prepared a comprehensive, multi-faceted proposal and we have delivered it to the DPRK officials via our Chinese emissary. Several members of our leadership and advisory team and have made multiple visits to the DPRK and are advising us accordingly. We are making further plans to visit the DPRK in the coming months to further bolster our business contacts and to research and assess various venues. We expect this ongoing project to require a sustained effort. We are committed to work as hard and as long as it takes to activate this rare and much needed entity. We will continue negotiating and flying into and out of the DPRK as needed during this process to lay the groundwork and to build the trust to ensure that a favorable outcome can be created. We want the DX community to be aware and to understand that a sustained effort is being made to activate this rare and important entity. It is noticed that references on the cluster record the passing of Mike Bazley VK6HD. Mike was one of Australia's most successful DXers and a popular catch for CQ Zone 29 on 160m. Mike Achieved #1 HR in DXCC and was a very good CW operator. Condolences to Mike's family and friends. He will be missed. ZL3JT

Amsterdamøya 2014 - FT5ZM - DXCC FT8Z, IOTA AF-002

FT5ZM blir nok en av de virkelig store begivenhetene i starten av 2014. "Vår" Erling, LA6VM, er en av operatørene i teamet som vil aktivere signaturen FT5ZM tidlig i januar 2014. DXPedisjonen har allerede fått egen hjemmeside : www.amsterdamdx.org

Her litt bakgrunn (fra Wikipedia) om øya:

Île Amsterdam («Amsterdamøya», også kalt Nouvelle Amsterdam, «Nye Amsterdam») er ei fransk øy som ligger Indiahavet. Øya er en del av de franske sørterritorier.Øya ble oppdaget av den spanske utforskeren Juan Sebastián Elcano den 18. mars 1522 på hans første jordomseiling. Elcano ga dog ikke noe navn til øya.
Da den nederlandske kapteinen Anthonie van Diemen gjenoppdaget øya i 1633 kalte han den for Nieuw Amsterdam (nederlandsk for Nye Amsterdam) etter skipet sitt.
Den franske kapteinen Pierre François Péron ble landfast på øya i årene 1792–1795. Pérons memoarer, hvor han fortalte om sin overlevelse alene på øya, ble utgitt i et lite opplag og er i dag ettertraktet hos boksamlere.
Denne øya og Île Saint-Paul ble tilknyttet Madagaskar i 1924 og ble således en fransk koloni.

En del i øynasjonen Mauritius betrakter Île Amsterdam og øya Saint-Paul som en del av deres nasjonale område. Spørsmålet om overherredømme over de to øyene har blitt fremmet av lederen av den politiske opposisjonen i 2007, Paul Raymond Berenger. Dette nye kravet har blitt diskutert med Frankrike sammen med kravet på Tromelinøya.

Solflekkemaksimum i 2013 ?

Vitenskapsfolk forutser at solflekke syklus nr 24 vil ha sitt maksimum i mai 2013 med et gjennomsnittlig antall solflekker på 90 pr dag. Dette fastslo et internasjonalt panel av eksperter på den årlige "Space Weather Workshop" i Bolder., Colorado siste måned.
Dersom denne prognosen slår til så vil solflekkesyklus nr 24 være den svakeste siden syklus nr 16 med sine gjennomsnittlige 78 daglige solflekker i 1928, og være den 9. dårligste siden man startet nummerering av syklus i 1750.
Panelet fastslo også at minimum sannsynligvis ble passert i desember 2008 og sykles nr 23 nå tydeligvis gikk over i syklus nr 24.
